Brent Councillors visit our school
Five Brent councillors, including the Leader of the Council, Mr Butt, visited our school after receiving letters from Year 5 and 6 children.
The children collated school-wide views from their School Council, and wrote to Cllr Butt about the problems they face every day whilst coming to school. The letters addressed many issues including the rubbish on Priory Park Road, the state of the road, the unsafe volume of traffic and air quality around the school.
As a response, five Brent councillors decided to pay our school a visit to see in person the problems raised by the children and to talk to them about their requests. Cllr Butt was joined by the Ward Councillor, the Director of Public Realm, the Team Leader Safety Travel Plan and the Neighbourhood Manager.
They were given a tour of the school and learnt about the impressive educational offer, the recent successful Ofsted inspection, the school’s mental health provision which sees - amongst other aspects - Neo the Dog Mentor, the arts provision and their new Ready to Learn Room which supports children with special needs.
After the tour, the councillors met some of the Year 5 and 6 pupils who wrote to them. They listened to the pupils’ concerns very carefully and committed to help with many of the issues raised. The children, after the initial nervousness, relaxed a little!
Nadia from Year 6 said: "I am impressed that our letters were taken seriously. We are only children, but they listen to our ideas. I think they will help to make the area around our school better."
The Leader of the Council, Mr Butt said: "It was a pleasure to meet with the pupils of Kilburn Grange School and hear first-hand about what needs to change in the area to make it safer, cleaner and greener. Council officers will be working closely with the school and the local policing team to put an action-plan in place, and I'd like to thank the pupils again for their first lobbying campaign, welcome to politics!"
Headteacher Helen Khinich said: “This was a fantastic learning opportunity for our children to make their voice heard, sit in a meeting with politicians who can help with issues important to them and learn about the democratic process. We are delighted that the five councillors made time to come and visit us, understood the need of our school and the local community, and promised to help.”
No Cars Day, 20th September 2024
We are also closely working with Camden and Brent boroughs and with the local resident association Brent Eleven Streets on a project called Kilburn Oasis.
The project will provide a pocket park on the street outside our school (Priory Park Road) on Friday 20th September, 12.30-6pm. The street will host many activities and will be transformed with the help of the artwork of our pupils as well as plants and turf. This will help the local residents to envisage how our street could become cleaner, safer and greener.
